Victoria Gozo

Historic island capital with citadel fortress

The capital of Gozo — a hilltop citadel town with 3,000 years of history, Gozo's best restaurants, and the island's only urban atmosphere.

Walkability
Good. Citadel and town centre are walkable. Some steep streets heading up to the fortress.
Parking
Good. Outside the Citadel walls, parking is easy. Inside is restricted.
Noise
Low. Quiet town. Market square has daytime bustle. Evenings are peaceful.
Transport
Good for Gozo. Main bus station with routes to every village and the Mgarr ferry terminal.

The Citadel was once the only safe refuge for Gozitans during pirate raids — islanders would retreat inside the walls and survive sieges that lasted weeks. The Cathedral's flat ceiling was painted by an Italian artist to create the illusion of a dome so convincing that visitors reportedly feel dizzy looking up. During WWII, Gozo was used as a base for the invasion of Sicily, and Churchill reportedly called the Citadel view 'the finest in the Mediterranean'.
